Free online OCR that never uploads your image
Need the text from a screenshot, a photo of a receipt, or a scanned page? This free image-to-text converter (OCR) reads it right in your browser. Drop in a PNG, JPG, or WebP, click “Extract text”, and copy the result — or download it as a .txt file. Most free OCR tools upload your image to their servers first; here the recognition runs on-device, so private documents stay private.
The engine is the open-source Tesseract OCR library, running locally via WebAssembly. The first extraction downloads the engine (a few megabytes, cached for next time); afterwards results are fast. For best accuracy use clear images with dark text on a light background — screenshots of articles, slides, and documents work beautifully.
Common use cases
- Copy text from screenshots you cannot select
- Digitize receipts, notes, and printed pages
- Extract quotes from slides and infographics
- Pull text from photos without uploading them anywhere

FAQs
How do I convert an image to text?+
Drop the image into the OCR tool and click “Extract text”. The tool reads the image with an on-device text-recognition engine and shows the extracted text, which you can copy or download as a .txt file. The first run downloads the engine (a few MB); afterwards it is instant.
Is my image uploaded to a server?+
No — and that is the point. Unlike most free OCR sites, this tool runs the recognition entirely on your device. Your photo or screenshot never leaves your browser, so it is safe for receipts, IDs, and private documents.
How accurate is the text extraction?+
Very good on clear images: screenshots, scanned pages, and photos with dark text on a light background. Accuracy drops on handwriting, highly stylized fonts, tiny text, or blurry photos. If a result looks wrong, try a sharper image with larger text.
Which image formats are supported?+
PNG, JPG, and WebP up to 10 MB. Very large images are automatically downscaled before recognition to keep it fast — this rarely affects accuracy for normal text.
Which languages are supported?+
English in this version. The underlying engine supports 100+ languages, so more will follow if there is demand.
