Lorem Ipsum generator, free and 100% in your browser

Lorem Ipsum is the design world's placeholder text — scrambled Latin from Cicero's De finibus bonorum et malorum (45 BC) that carries no meaning, so readers judge your layout instead of your words. The generator above produces paragraphs, sentences, exact word counts, bullet lists and headings instantly in your browser: choose one of 7 themed packs (Hipster, Cupcake, Pirate, Office, Cat, Zombie, Legal), copy as plain text or clean HTML, or download .txt / .html. And unlike the classic generators it was built to replace — no pop-ups, no cookie-consent banners, no video ads, no trackers. Ever.

TL;DR

  • Instant, zero friction: 5 paragraphs by default, regenerate with one click — no modal, no consent banner, no ad blocking your way to three words.
  • Every unit you need: paragraphs, sentences, exact word count, lists and headings — plus paste-clean HTML output.
  • 7 themed packs: Classic, Hipster, Cupcake, Pirate, Office, Cat, Zombie and Legal — clean, never NSFW.
  • Private: 100% client-side generation — nothing is uploaded, and the page works offline once loaded.

What is Lorem Ipsum, exactly?

It is a corrupted version of Cicero's De finibus bonorum et malorum, written in 45 BC — specifically sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33. Somewhere in its history the words were altered, added and removed until the Latin stopped making sense. The famous opener, “Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet…”, began life as “dolorem ipsum” (“pain itself”); a printer dropped the first two letters of dolorem, leaving the non-word lorem that every designer now knows. Because the vocabulary is real Latin but the grammar is nonsense, type set in it reads naturally in English letterforms while carrying no message — the ideal filler.

Why do designers use it?

Real copy distracts: clients proofread the words instead of judging the layout, and draft copy can accidentally ship to production. Meaningless filler keeps every eye on spacing, hierarchy and typography. It also avoids the “grey box” problem — plain rectangles reveal nothing about how a paragraph of real text behaves. Lorem Ipsum's Latin-like letter shapes approximate English rhythm well enough to expose real layout issues before a single word of final copy exists.

Where did it actually come from?

The modern text was standardised on Letraset dry-transfer sheets first published in 1966, then spread through desktop publishing when Aldus PageMaker shipped it in its templates in the mid-1980s. The Cicero source was traced by Richard McClintock, a Latin scholar at Hampden–Sydney College, who searched classical texts for the rare word “consectetur” sometime before 1982 and published his finding in a 1994 letter to Before & After magazine. One honest caveat: several generator sites claim typesetters used it “since the 1500s”, but McClintock admitted that date was a guess with no evidence — so we don't repeat it.

FAQs

What is Lorem Ipsum?+

Lorem Ipsum is placeholder text used by designers and developers to fill layouts before the real content exists. It is a scrambled, corrupted passage of Latin from Cicero's "De finibus bonorum et malorum" (45 BC), with words altered, added and removed until it is nonsense. Because it is meaningless, readers focus on the design rather than the words — and its Latin-like look approximates English letter shapes, so typefaces and spacing read naturally.

What does Lorem Ipsum mean?+

Nothing — that is the point. It is deliberately nonsensical so it carries no message of its own. The words are fragments of real Latin, scrambled beyond meaning; only a few survive in recognisable form. Use it as a visual stand-in, never as copy: publishing it to a live site tells visitors the design is unfinished.

What does the word "Lorem" mean?+

"Lorem" is not a real Latin word — it is a fragment. The original line was "dolorem ipsum" ("pain itself"), and somewhere in the passage's history the first two letters of "dolorem" were dropped, leaving "lorem". "Ipsum" is genuine Latin and means "itself" or "very" — the surviving half of "pain itself". So the famous opening literally begins with a word that does not exist.

Where does Lorem Ipsum come from?+

It comes from Cicero's philosophical work "De finibus bonorum et malorum", written in 45 BC — specifically sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33. The version used today was standardised on Letraset dry-transfer sheets first published in 1966, and it became the industry default when Aldus PageMaker shipped it in its templates in the mid-1980s. Some sites claim typesetters used it "since the 1500s", but that date was an admitted guess with no evidence — stick with 1966 as the verified start of the modern text.

How many words are in a standard Lorem Ipsum paragraph?+

The standard opening paragraph — "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet…" through "…id est laborum" — is exactly 69 words in 4 sentences. Most generators, including this one, vary paragraph length (typically 4–9 sentences), so only the very first paragraph has a fixed count. If you need a precise amount, use the Exact words mode above.

What is the English translation of "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet"?+

There is no direct translation because the passage is scrambled nonsense. Its source line was "Neque porro quisquam est qui dolorem ipsum quia dolor sit amet" — "There is no one who loves pain itself, who seeks after it and wants to have it, simply because it is pain…" A 1914 translation of Cicero's original work (by H. Rackham) exists, but the Lorem Ipsum text itself cannot be translated word-for-word; any "translation" you find online is reconstructed from the Cicero source.

Is Lorem Ipsum real Latin?+

It is real Latin words, but not real Latin prose. The vocabulary is genuine (dolor, sit, amet, consectetur are all proper Latin), but the grammar has been scrambled — words are cut, pasted and repeated until no sentence means anything. A Latin scholar would recognise the words and find the sentences absurd, which is exactly what you want from filler text.

Does the text always start with "Lorem ipsum"?+

By convention, yes — every major generator starts with "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet…" by default, because designers recognise the opening instantly as placeholder text. The toggle above follows that standard and is on by default. Turn it off (or pick the Random start option in most tools) if you need a fresh arrangement that still reads as classic filler.

Can I get HTML output instead of plain text?+

Yes — switch on "Copy as HTML" above and every block is wrapped in clean markup: paragraphs in <p>, lists in <ul><li>, headings in <h2>. The HTML is paste-clean: no inline styles, no classes, no scripts, no hidden tracking — just semantic tags you can drop straight into your template.

Who discovered the source of Lorem Ipsum?+

Richard McClintock, a Latin scholar at Hampden–Sydney College. Sometime before 1982 he searched classical texts for the rare word "consectetur" and traced the passage to Cicero's "De finibus". He published his finding in a 1994 letter to John McWade, editor of Before & After magazine — and that letter is how the origin story reached the design world.
